Arizona Weekend

I drove to Arizona over the weekend (12-10-09) to try my hand and lens at Catalina State Park in Oro Valley just north of Tuscon.

Jack Dykinga, the iconic Arizona landscape photographer, was giving a workshop, and I was lucky enough to be one of the participants.

The beautiful and graceful saguaro cactus, which can grow to 66 feet (20 m) in height and whose branches are shaped like candelabra, is native to Mexico and the southwestern United States.

These photographs are the results of a hard but exhilarating weekend's work and play.

Newest! Italy & Greece 10-09

The images in this gallery were all taken in Italy and Greece (a couple in Turkey and Croatia too), October 2009.

Susan and I traveled together for 17 days with her brother, Jim, and his wife, Janice--wonderful company for a wonderful adventure. Then Susan stayed another two weeks on her own in Italy, indefatigable as she is when museums are close by.

My photography hopes for this trip were a bit different from those of times past. You'll see no images of the icons--Trevi Fountain, Roman ruins, Acropolis, Grand Canal, etc. I photographed them, but decided not to include those images here--with an exception or two.

Most of the images here are of smaller stuff--tableaux, moments in time, glimpses of people, bits and pieces of this and that--but, I hope, always with an exotic flavor.

Textures, colors, shapes, and forms of amazing variety seemed like magnets to my eyes and camera.

Sometimes in my rush to see the Grand Canyon, I've overlooked, or even trampled, the wildflowers near the path. For most of this trip, I was looking for "wildflowers."

I hope you like what you see here, and, as always, thank you for taking the time to look.

This gallery features my most recent photographs of whatever kind, so there is no particular theme.
Later on, I will put these into other "themed" galleries, but because I wanted them to have a home now, here they are.

As always, thanks for looking!

England, April 1-14, 2009

Those two weeks flew by, and back home now, I'm starting to build this "England" gallery. I'll be adding images a bit at a time over the next weeks, so come back now and then to see what's new.

My favorite photos of this trip are those of the English countryside, mostly in the Cotswolds. So, I want to thank my new friend Adrian Cray, whom I met online in a photo forum and then met up with in England, for showing me places I'd never have found on my own and for reminding me to "wait for the light." I can't say how much I enjoyed his company and how much I appreciated his time and attention.

Some of the photos are of iconic places, but many of them aren't. They are just my takes on some of the smaller details that caught my eye.

As always, I very much appreciate your looking at my stuff. There is a guest comment feature on the home page if you want to drop me a word or two. Thanks.

Some Flowers

I've finally decided to try my hand at flowers, after long admiring the splendid flower pieces of others. There is nothing easy about making good flower photographs, even though it might look so. I hope you like some of these, and I also hope that I'll have more to add before long.

The photos in this gallery are among my favorites. They all make wonderful large prints from the TIFF files developed from original RAW files. The jpgs posted here are a bit larger than those in my other galleries, so I encourage you to enlarge them as you view them. Thanks for visiting.

This collection of black and white images (or nearly so in some cases) is my newest gallery, but the images themselves are not the newest I've made.

All of them started out life as color photographs that I converted into their current form in the digital darkroom. I saw most of them as black and white images from the moment of capture, but others I converted when I was disappointed in their original color renditions.

I took all these images over the past three years, and, as you can tell from their brief captions, they come from the U.S. and Europe.
